Dumfries & Galloway Health & Social Care

Right Care, Right Place

Right Care, Right Place

Work has been taking place across 2023 focused on meeting the health and social care needs of the communities within Dumfries and Galloway.

A main concern is intermediate care, which is the care people require which takes place in between the two acute hospitals – Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary and Galloway Community Hospital – and what someone is able to manage in their own home.

Through extensive engagement work, people have told us the importance of having access to services within their community, close to home.

Discussions have taken place around respite care, palliative care, end of life care, step and step down care, and the roles of care homes and cottage hospitals.

Consultation has taken place around a new flexible approach to intermediate care, which should allow for the commissioning of beds within communities to serve a range of needs.

In addition, the 12 weeks of public consultation saw us define intermediate care, consult on the findings of the earlier engagement, and begin to look at ideas for how intermediate care should be delivered in each local area, over three timescales – 1-2 years, 5 years and 10-15 years.

The next phase of Right Care, Right Place is now underway, picking up conversations with stakeholders on how all that has been assembled so far is applied practically to meeting needs.

As such, development workshops are now taking pace, running into the start of the new year, inviting stakeholders to continue the conversations.

These developmental sessions will give us an opportunity to begin developing future service models that we will share with Dumfries and Galloway Integration Joint Board (IJB) in March before coming back out to consult on these more widely.

We appreciate communities’ enthusiasm for progress on our operational approaches, and would just ask for continued patience, with the promise that a clearer roadmap for the future should be appearing at the start of next year.
